9 SEO Link Building Strategies for Quality Backlinks in 2019
Here, you’re going to learn exactly how to build quality backlinks in 2019 with these proven 9 SEO link building strategies. In fact, I’ve used these strategies for my clients to get links from Business Insider, Mashable, Huffington Post and more. I’m going to show you 9 proven SEO link building strategies powered by Data and Technology.
I started my first website back in 2014 when I first moved to the UK. Doctorsnearme.uk…yes, the medical search engine. As we all started, I didn’t have any idea what to do. I followed some tutorials and guides on the Internet how to connect Google Analytics and Search Console. I did all the On-site SEO with Yoast. BTW, make sure to check my SEO Checklist 2019 for more On-site SEO insights. Next, link building… so I first started with directory links to build some online reputation but I was seeing no results and still almost no one was hitting my website. So I decided to look for backlink generating tools. I ran a few different ones, I waited for a couple of days and still no effect. I was pulling my hair thinking of ways to build my website quickly and start getting some business.
One day, I was checking my website in Moz and from out of the blue, I noticed that Doctorsnearme now got 15 Domain Authority. Wait…but how? I checked my organic traffic – no change. Then the organic keywords…nothing. After some time, I got hit by a thought – the backlink generators I used, remember? – My website had 10000 backlinks from 100 domains, that’s 100 links per domain. So far, so good at least I got some progress with the backlinks, right? Well, no because even as little traffic as I had, it sharply dropped by 80%… I started reading about the Black Hat SEO (I didn’t know it even exists before that) and found out that Google Penguin update from 2012 hits all websites with spammy backlinks. That’s right and the worst part is that Google might decide to sandbox you. E.g. hide your website from Google Search results and you’re done. That’s one of the reasons why I warn my clients and readers NOT TO USE Black Hat Strategies and pay for cheap links. It’s so risky that you can trash your website overnight. I know it’s tempting and it’s easy and it’s probably not that risky for amateur webbers but believe me when I say I’ve seen businesses paying for backlinks from forums, directories, PBNs, link pyramids and literally building new websites afterwards to start from point 0.
After reading about the Black Hat SEO, I thought okay there’s Black, so there should be White, Yin – Yang, right? I disavowed all the spammy backlinks and started learning about White Hat SEO and by executing the White Hat link building strategies I’m about to share with you today, Doctorsnearme organic traffic boomed. I also started ranking for competitive keywords like private GP Edinburgh, doctors near me, private medical help and more. You probably ask how? Well, let’s dive into it…

9 SEO Link Building Strategies for Quality Backlinks in 2019
Link roundups are exactly what it sounds. These are websites that post a round-up of maybe monthly, weekly or all-time valuable content. Why this strategy is great? Because these websites are already searching for your amazing content, so you just need to let them know it exists.

First, you need to find link roundups in your industry. And here are some search operators that works really well. Just enter these search operators in Google and you should find tons of high-quality roundups. And once you find a link roundup that seems like a good fit it’s time to pitch your content.
yourkeyword “best blog posts”
yourkeyword “best blog updates”
yourkeyword “best blogs updates”
yourkeyword “best pieces of content”
yourkeyword “best posts of the month”
yourkeyword “best posts of the month”
yourkeyword “best posts of the week”
yourkeyword “best posts this week”
yourkeyword “daily link round up”
yourkeyword “daily round up”
yourkeyword “favorite posts of the month
yourkeyword “favorite posts of the week”
yourkeyword “friday link round up”
yourkeyword “friday round up”
Here’s the email template that I personally use. You want to send an email to the person that runs the roundup. As you can see this email doesn’t look spammy or generic. I just let the prospect know that my content exists and gently suggest to include it in their next roundup. You also offer something valuable in return and if your content is a good fit for this roundup and audience you’ll get a sweet link. That’s all there is to it. With that, it’s time for our next SEO link building strategy.
It’s no secret that backlinks from .edu websites are super high quality. The question is how you actually get university sites to link to you. EDU resource pages – Here’s how it works.
Most universities have resource pages where they link to content that could help their students and faculty. Here is an example of a resource page that talks about nutrition and supplements. For example, let’s say you have a Web site about nutrition. First, you want to find resource pages like the one from the example above. To do that pop these search operators in Google and then search to see if a piece of your content would be a good fit for that page.
site:.edu ”yourkeyword” + “resources”
site:.edu ”yourkeyword” + intile: helpful links
site:.edu ”yourkeyword” + “external resources”
Finally, email the person who runs this page. Now keep this in mind that only about 5% of the websites that you reach out to will actually add your link. That’s the bad news. The good news is even one or two of these links can make a massive difference in your Google rankings. For example, I recently used this strategy to get a link from the University of Michigan web site. And that single link made a significant difference in my organic traffic.
Broken Link Building
Broken link building is one of my all-time favourite link building strategies. Why? You see when most people build backlinks they send generic emails with no value at all. Can I have a link, please? Thank you. – sends the boy with the broken link building. You add value to someone’s Web site and then ask for a link. Here’s the step by step process.
- The first step is to install Check My Links – a free Google Chrome extension that finds broken links on any page. I’ll show you how to use this tool in a minute but for now, let’s move on to step number two.
- Find a site that you want to get a link from. You probably already have a few examples in mind and if not just Google keywords related to your industry. The websites coming up in the search results are great sites to get backlinks from. For example, last year I wanted to build links to my list of SEO tools, so I Google things like SEO checklist or tutorial.
- Next, it’s time to check for broken links to do this, just visit a few pages on the site you just found and run the check. My links extension will reveal all the broken links on that page. This is the SEO strategy that no one talks about.
- Finally, let the web admin know about their broken links and offer your content as a replacement. For example, when I find a broken link on someone’s site, I send them a personalised email. The more you personalise your email the more links you’ll get
Anyway when they reply to my message I sent them the URL of the broken link. I also pitch my tool or blog post as a replacement for the dead link and because I added value first then ask for something in return people were happy to link to me and now it’s time for a strategy number three.
Build links from Podcasts
A few months ago, I was checking out one of the sites in my niche where they got their backlinks from and I noticed that a big chunk of their backlinks came from going on podcasts so I decided to become a guest on as many podcasts as I could. In fact, I appeared on over 5 podcasts over the next year and a half. Not only did these podcasts send some serious traffic my way but they resulted in tons of high-quality backlinks. And now moving right along to our next technique.
Brand your strategies
Years ago, I was searching for productivity advice and I came across this post by Merlin Mann. He outlines something called Inbox Zero – a productivity approach to use your mailbox as your To Do List. But that wasn’t what grabbed my attention. This simple idea generated over 5000 backlinks and when I looked over those backlinks I noticed a pattern. Most people linked to the page because it outlined a strategy with a unique name Inbox Zero. That’s when I decided that I would brand my strategies too. So next time I talked about a strategy on my blog I called it the Competition Spyglass. So how did it go? The post where I first mentioned the skyscraper technique has been linked to over 50 times. And if you look at those links 90% of them are due to the fact that I gave my strategy a unique brand name. Now moving right to strategy number five.
Next up we have strategy number 6 pre-outreach. A while back, one of my readers Ameel was getting ready to publish an epic piece of content and Ameel realised that his post had the potential to rank #1 Google for his target keyword. Although, if he wants to achieve this he needs to build links. So Ameel decided to promote his post before he even published it. This is known as pre-outreach. Here’s how it went down.
First, Ameel found blogs that wrote about employee wellness and he sent them a simple message while he didn’t beg for a link. Most of the people Ameel talked to were happy to hear from him. Once his post went live, he sent a link to everyone that responded to his first email and that led to a bunch of social shares and a nice contextual backlash. With that, it’s time for our next strategy.

The moving man method
First, find web pages resources or businesses that are outdated just rebranded or recently changed names. Next, identify websites that are still referencing these outdated resources. Finally, let people know that they’re linking to something that’s out of date.
Let me show you how this works with a real-life example. A while back I read that a Web site for a big SEO agency suddenly shut down. This meant they had tons of pages on their site that wasn’t working anymore. Pages that lots of writers were still linking to and what I specifically noticed that an infographic about SEO wasn’t working anymore. That was perfect because I had just published my own SEO focused infographic. Nice, so that was the first step? Next, I had to see who actually linked to this infographic so I fired up a draft and pulled all of their links. Finally, I emailed everyone that still linked to that infographic I let them know that the image wasn’t working anymore. I also let them know that my infographics would make a great replacement for. Speaking of infographics, it’s time for our last SEO link building strategy.
Last year SEO Builder reader Matt Lowry had a problem. Matt runs yellow octopus – an e-commerce site in Australia that sells gifts and he quickly realized something. It’s really difficult to build links for e-commerce business. After all who would want a link to a site that’s made up of 100% product and category pages. That’s when Matt realised to build links to his site he’d need to publish awesome content. So what did he do?
First Matt put together an epic piece of content an Ultimate Guide to Australian Gems. This guide contained everything someone would want to know about Gems from Australia in one place. Of course, Matt didn’t just wait for the links to magically appear. He promoted his content with an SEO link building strategy in mind because Matt reached out to the right people and sent them personalised emails. Some people even offered to link to his guide and all these backlinks boosted Matt’s rankings for a keyword that is customer search for every day “Australian gem”. His article even pops up in the featured snippet spot on Google. Now before we close out this article let me show you a cool bonus tip apart from the 9 SEO link building strategies I already shared with you.
Find guest posting opportunities with Google Images
That’s right I said guest posting. A lot of digital marketers think that when it comes to link building guest blogging is dead. But is it true? Not really. In fact, when you’re just starting SEO, guest posts are one of the best ways to build quality backlinks to your site. For example, when I first started SEO Builder I guest posted like a madman. I wrote over 30 guest posts and interviews in about a year and the backlinks I got gave my organic traffic a nice early boost.
That said I was very strategic about it. I made sure to only write guest posts for relevant quality websites in my niche so if you run a site about the Paleo diet and write a guest post for a site about iPhones that’s going to look spammy but when you write mind-blowing guest posts for quality sites in your industry those links do help. The question is how you find sites to guest post with Google images? Here’s this step by step process.
